180° Rule

The 180 degree rule

A line is drawn between two actors or along a path they're going to take. Then, an arc is drawn on one side of that line. The camera must stay along that line when filming, so that continuity errors don't occur.

Walking Sequence 1
Our challenge to test this knowledge was to create
a walking sequence that doesn't break the rule. We
first had to get three consecutive shots of somebody
walking. Then, we had to put them together in a way
that made sense.

CHALLENGES

  • I found that it was difficult to line up each shot with the last because I wasn't sure whether to let the actor leave the frame before transitioning or not.
  • The actor started walking whilst in the frame, limiting the amount of footage I ended up having.

Walking sequence 2

Our second attempt was to improve on the things
we filmed in our first attempt - we got more shot
variation by getting more footage.

IMPROVEMENTS
  • I filmed each shot for longer so that I would have more footage to work with.
  • We were also told to film someone both entering
  • and then leaving a scene to solve issues with unnatural acting - if someone starts walking in the middle of a shot it looks very unnatural.
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENT

  • I need to work out white balance.
  • I would perhaps like to change the framing of the last shot in the sequence. She could go from the last to the first third.
